History

The origins of Aigues Mortes have been lost in the mists of time. Men used to fish, collect salt, and tame the whims of such a wild nature and malarial climate long before Louis IX, with his grand designs and gestures arrived in XIII C; investing Aigues-Mortes with such a rich history that the city still basks in it today.

Since then Aigues-Mortes, an immense and imposing structure never ceases to evolve or to surprise, transcending inexorable wars, conflicts, and times both of peace and of strife. Its towers and its ramparts bear the imprints of time, haunted by the secrets of their resistance.

Today, Aigues-Mortes preserves its bull-fighting traditions, including bull branding. Renowned for its place in Camarguese Gastronomy, Aigues-Mortes looks to the Mediterranean for a harmonic fusion of the secrets of its past with the charms of its future.

Blessed with a clear climate and unique vegetation, the region of Aigues-Mortes can be explored all year long whether on foot, on horseback, by bike or even on safari in a 4x4 or by boat.
